Common IT Infrastructure Problems (and How to Fix Them)

Most infrastructure problems are not dramatic failures — they are slow accumulations of risk that go unnoticed until they cause an outage, a breach, or a project that grinds to a halt. Across two decades of engagements, the same issues come up again and again. Here are the most common, and how to address each.

1. End-of-life hardware and software

Devices and operating systems past their supported life no longer receive security updates and are prone to failure. Fix: inventory everything, identify what is end-of-life, and plan phased replacement before it fails or gets breached.

2. Single points of failure

One server, one internet link, or one device whose failure stops the business. Fix: identify critical dependencies and add redundancy or failover so no single component can take you down — a recurring theme in our resilience work.

3. No or untested backups

Backups that silently fail, or that have never been restored, are a false sense of security. Fix: automated backup and recovery with verified, regularly tested restores.

4. Poor or no documentation

When the network only exists in one person’s memory, every change is risky and every absence is a crisis. Fix: document the environment — topology, configurations, accounts, and dependencies.

5. Inconsistent or missing patching

Unpatched systems are the most common route to a breach. Fix: a scheduled patching routine across all systems, not ad-hoc updates.

6. No monitoring

Without monitoring, problems are discovered by users, not by IT. Fix: continuous monitoring so issues are caught before they cause downtime.

7. Capacity that has not kept up with growth

Infrastructure sized for the business three years ago struggles with today’s load. Fix: capacity planning informed by monitoring data and growth projections.
