Checklist being marked complete with a red pen

Growing businesses outgrow their IT quietly. The setup that worked at 20 people strains at 60 and breaks at 120. This checklist is a practical way to audit your foundation. Go through each section — anything you cannot tick with confidence is a gap worth closing before it becomes an incident.

Hardware and assets

  • You have a complete, current inventory of all hardware (IT asset management).
  • No critical systems run on end-of-life or unsupported hardware.
  • Warranties and support contracts on critical equipment are current.
  • Capacity has been reviewed against current and projected growth.

Network and connectivity

  • Network hardware is modern and supported.
  • Internet bandwidth matches actual usage with headroom.
  • Critical connectivity has redundancy (no single internet link as a single point of failure).
  • Guest and IoT traffic is separated from your core network.

Security

  • A firewall is in place and its rules are reviewed.
  • Multi-factor authentication is enforced on key accounts.
  • Endpoint protection is deployed on all devices.
  • Systems are patched on a defined schedule — see endpoint security best practices.

Backup and recovery

  • Critical data is backed up automatically.
  • Backups have been tested by actually restoring from them.
  • A documented disaster recovery plan exists.
  • Recovery time and recovery point objectives are defined.

Documentation and management

  • Your network and systems are documented (not just in one person’s head).
  • Monitoring is in place across critical systems.
  • There is a clear process for logging and resolving issues.
  • Someone is accountable for IT — internally or via a provider.
